Essay Ideas 1. Should we send people to Mars? For example Yes: Could include the challenge of overcoming technical problems like the Mars atmosphere & cold temperatures, promoting international cooperation, and how going into space has benefited us through technology. No: Could address the expense and that robots could be used instead, the focus should be on society’s problems here and there are other ways for international cooperation. 2. Explain to an “ET” the best and worst behaviors of humans or our society. 3. What would it be like to live on the International Space Station? 4. How does understanding other planets help us understand our own? 5. Over 90% of the scientists that ever lived are still living today, what might they discover in this new century? 6. How would the world be changed if we made contact with another (alien) civilization?
Math Ideas 1. How much would you weigh on each planet? 2. Make a chart or graph comparing facts (distance, size, etc.) about each planet. 3. If a model of the Earth was 4 inches in diameter, how big would the moon be and how far away in scale? 4. The Sun’s diameter is about 100 times that of the Earth’s diameter. About how many “Earths” would it take to cover a circle the size of the Sun? How many “Earths” would fit into the Sun? 5. The radius from earth to the Sun is about 100 million miles. Calculate the speed of the Earth in its orbit. 6. The early Greeks knew the Earth casts a round shadow on the moon during a lunar eclipse. What shapes (spheres, cones, pyramids, cubes, etc.) can do the same?
