State tests show continued rise in reading and math.
Nearly two-thirds of schools meet reading goals early, gains are widespread across state, and among racial/ethnic groups according to a September 12, 2000, news release from the Washington State Superintendent's Office. "We're seeing excellent progress among a broad group of kids from diverse ethnic backgrounds, among boys and girls and in schools across the landscape of Washington state," said Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson. "It's terrific news for parents, teachers and community leaders who are investing so much in preparing our kids for their future. Not only are we are enjoying solid gains in traditional testing, we are, more importantly, seeing steady and consistent growth on the WASL," said Bergeson. "That's two thumbs up for Washington state schools."
