Spaceflight
Manned space exploration continues the tradition of mankind the explorer. For a brief history of manned spaceflight see the Spaceflight History page.
Landing on the Moon
In this famous picture from the Apollo 11 mission Buzz Aldrin is photographed on the surface of the moon. In larger images you can see the reflection of Neil Armstrong in the helmet visor.
See a summary of these historic Apollo missions on the Moon Landing page.
Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has given astronomers a look at distant parts of the universe without the interference of Earth's atmosphere. Other orbiting telescopes like Chandra, SOHO and others have expanded our knowledge of the solar system and the beyond. See more on the Telescopes in Space page.
Space Probes
Sending spacecraft to other worlds is a way of exploring places that are very far away and dangerous to humans. See more about these robotic missions on the Space Exploration Probes page.
How does NASA get funding for their programs? The United States Congress has control of the money needed to pay for spaceflights, sending space probes, studying the Earth through satellites and other programs.
